Abstract: Switched Linear Systems (SLS) are hybrid dynamical systems, composed by a collection of Linear time--invariant Systems (LS), and a switching signal determining, at each time instant, the evolving LS. In the last decade, SLS have attracted considerable attention, of both control and computer scientific communities, because of their capability of modeling complex systems, capturing both the continuous and discrete system behaviors (biological networks, fault tolerant systems, air traffic management systems, among others). Consequently, the need of studying their fundamental properties, like observability, controllability and stability, becomes an important issue.

This talk presents the observability of continuous-time SLS using a geometric approach. The study is centered on determining the initial and current state of the SLS (continuous and discrete) by observing the output of the LS, where both cases, known and unknown inputs, are considered.
Using the well known concept of (A,B)--invariant subspaces, three main problems are addressed, namely observability for every nonzero state trajectory, observability for a generic set of control inputs and observability for a generic set of state trajectories. It will be show that the proposed approach subsumes some of the results on observability of SLS reported in the literature, and allows expressing them in a common framework.

About David Gómez-Gutiérrez: David Gómez-Gutiérrez was born in Jalisco, Mexico in 1983. He received the M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering degree in 2008 from the Research and Advanced Studies Center of the National Polytechnic Institute (CINVESTAV) in Guadalajara, Mexico. He is currently working towards the Ph.D. degree at CINVESTAV and is a student member of the IEEE Industrial Electronics and Control Systems Societies. His research interests includes modeling, analysis and control of hybrid systems. D. Gómez-Gutiérrez is currently at a three months stay research at UTIA, working on an observer design for SLS, under the supervision of Doc.RNDr. Sergej Čelikovský.
